Holy Communion

When I was preparing to receive my First Communion in the Catholic Church, we were sternly instructed not to chew the communion wafer. Now to a seven year old there are two challenges to that rule. The temptation to bite the wafer to discover if anything horrific would take place was overpowering. Since chewing was prohibited, then the next challenge was to keep it from sticking to the roof of my mouth. I imagined that scraping it off with my finger was a far more serious offense than chewing.

The instructions concerning Holy Communion overshadowed the significance of the tradition. As an adult I came to appreciate the bread as the representation of the body of spiritual ideas and the wine as the circulation of those ideas into consciousness.

Receiving the bread and wine as the symbol of the body and blood of Jesus is a gift of renewal, rebirth and an act of love. The blessing of communion is bringing heaven to earth.

The Emerging Spirituality

The war on drugs, the war on terror, the war on poverty. We are pretty much in agreement with what we are against in life. That part is easy. The important aspect to spirituality is to identify is what we stand for and what we believe in.

We begin by recognizing that there is a power for good that is God. Each of us is an individualized expression of this life. We see that expression revealed as love, peace, harmony, joy and abundance. We value the preciousness of freedom and the graciousness of God’s gifts.

Our connection with love is our connection with God. As we practice staying present and in the now, we open ourselves to more love, more peace and more joy.

Presence of Peace

Today is the day we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, exactly one week before His resurrection. People gathered around and laid palm branches before him welcoming him into the city.

Jerusalem represents the abiding presence of peace. We recognize Jesus as Christ consciousness and an awareness of oneness. Palm Sunday symbolizes our willingness to welcome the presence of God’s Love into our hearts and peace into our minds.

Fillmore states “When the I AM consciousness takes charge of the body a new order of things is inaugurated. Vitality is no longer wasted. Through high and pure ideals the whole consciousness is raised to a higher standard.” Today is our opportunity to rejoice in our oneness and in God’s eternal love.

Faith + Love = Transformation

One of the miracles Jesus performed early in his life was transforming water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. It was a very simple act of love fueled by his unwavering faith. The result was unmistakable grace.

We have an opportunity every day to transform our thoughts from fear into love. Feeling gratitude, remembering to breathe, whispering a prayer, listening to uplifting music and connecting with beauty are just a few of the ways to inspire love into our thinking.

This time of year is a metamorphosis of life. We celebrate the newness of spring, honor freedom in the festival of Passover and are renewed with the promise of eternal life in Easter. We are reminded of the preciousness of life and the joy of living. Whatever tradition you celebrate, take a moment this week to acknowledge and celebrate the presence of Love. And watch the transformation take place. Blessings.

P.S. I was so blessed to travel to Israel on pilgrimage earlier this year. This is a photo of the beautiful little church honoring the wedding feast in Cana. It was an unforgettable journey.

Transfiguration of thoughts

I was in awe watching the Olympic athletes this year and their commitment to train day after day, week after week, year after year. I was amazed by their persistence to keep going no matter what obstacles came their way. I respected their courage to continue even though they had injuries, surgeries and life challenges.

I imagine that they have fears and doubts just like the rest of us. What keeps them motivated is the vision of what is possible. They have the faith to keep moving forward no matter what happens.

Staying connected with God and moving forward with our goals is like climbing a mountain. Faith is the fuel that keeps us climbing. Love is the inspiration that keeps us moving. Forgiveness melts any obstacle in our way while gratitude infuses us with oxygen to keep us going. The exquisite experience of joy is the end result.

Ultimately, thoughts of lack and limitation have to be transfigured or changed in order to keep going. Faith is an individual process of growth, patience and willingness. As we let go of the pictures of doubt and replace them with a vision of love, we can reach any mountaintop.

Forgiveness

Have you ever held a grudge against someone? I did and noticed it was keeping me pretty occupied. Avoiding them, trying not to think about them, trying hard to pretend they didn’t hurt me…it was exhausting.

When we don’t forgive we stay in the struggle. It is a burden we carry on our souls that keeps us prisoners to the past. We are in bondage with anger, bitterness and resentment. When we don’t forgive, it makes it difficult to move forward in life because there is a wall that separates us from love.

Forgiveness is an opportunity to let go. Forgiveness puts an end to the illusion of separation. It takes a great deal of courage to let go. When we do, it is one of the most important processes that will bring harmony to life and peace to our soul. We are free to express love into the world.

Divine Substance

What if you knew you had access to unlimited resources?

The source of all material wealth is Divine Substance. It is the spiritual consciousness that connects us with the infinite, abundant universe. It is available to us 24/7. However, we have to be willing and conscious recipients of the wealth.

When we connect our spiritual path as part of our daily activity, there is a divine flow of life. When we are open and receptive all sorts of blessings are available to us. We may occasionally bump up against thoughts of lack or limitation. When the mind has been trained through dedicated practice, we can redirect our thoughts back to love instead of lack, freedom instead of limitation.

Divine Substance is more than wealth. It is the experience of being open to the richness of the universal flow. It’s our disciplined thinking that uses the mind constructively to bring about right results.

Divine Judgment

Would you rather be right or rather be loved?

It is very popular to play the blame game in today’s society. We have gotten into the habit of finding a scapegoat, someone to blame for the problems of the world. We blame the government, stock market, banks, wealthy people, poor people, big business, other countries and our parents for the pain and suffering of today’s world. We are busy pointing fingers and worrying about what others are doing or not doing.

It’s so easy to observe what others are doing and to give advice how they should change their behavior. Actually it is a way to avoid looking at our own mental blocks and conflicts. What is most important on our spiritual journey is paying attention to what we are doing, thinking and saying.

Having compassion for ourselves and others opens us to love and be loved. Love is the awakening of Christ in us. Love is the healing power beyond judgment and blame. There is always a choice. So would you rather be right or be loved?

Patience

Are we there yet? Regardless of the age of our physical body, our inner being has the excitable qualities of a five year old anxiously wanting to get to the prize. Life teaches us that sometimes the things we want take time and if we want to stay sane in the process, it is imperative to develop patience.

I’ve learned that patience is less about waiting and more about developing faith. Living in faith is a place of knowing that I am on the right path. There are days that I may struggle with my faith and sense of well being. This too shall pass. As I stay on purpose and in practice I can connect with the bigger picture of life.

Gratitude helps us develop patience. As we identify the blessings we have already received, we open to the greater Good God has to give. Fillmore reminds us “Begin to praise God for the abundance of all things; your words will crack the omnipresent ethers and good will flow to you from every direction.”

Principle

Clogged sink, taxes due, car repair needed. The mind goes on overwhelm and spirals downward with thoughts of fear and scarcity. Am I going to give my power to my fear thoughts or on spiritual principle?

There are principles or laws that are constantly at work in the world around us. We know there is a law of gravity. We can’t see it or feel it but we know without it we would be left floating around the universe. We know gravity is there and we depend on it to keep us grounded.

By being aware of the spiritual laws, we can put our attention on them and use them to our benefit. For example, spiritual principle states ‘Whatever we put our attention on increases.’ I can spend my time in worry or in faith that everything I need will be provided.
Fillmore states, “To demonstrate Principle keep establishing yourself in affirmations of the law. The more often you present to your mind a logical and true proposition, the stronger becomes the inner feeling of the realization.”

I choose the principle of peace today knowing that everything I need is already provided. Praise God!
